Georgia football staffer and former All-American Jarvis Jones was arrested late Friday night in Athens, Georgia, for speeding and reckless driving.
Jones was charged with reckless driving and speeding-maximum limits and booked into Clarke County Jail, according to Athens-Clarke County Police jail records. He was released early Saturday morning on $2,400 bond.
A two-time first-team All-American for the Bulldogs in 2011-12 and the school record holder for sacks in a season (14.5) and tackles for loss (24.5), Jones was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 17th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He played four season in Pittsburgh, and he is now a player coordinator for the Georgia football team.
Jones was on the sidelines for the Bulldogs' 48-7 season opening win over UT Martin on Saturday, the Red & Black reported.
Head coach Kirby Smart said Monday afternoon Jones would be internally disciplined and he "can't comment further on it."
Georgia football driving issues
Jones' arrest comes as Georgia has had at least 14 players arrested or receive citations for speeding or reckless driving since the fatal crash on Jan. 15 that resulted in the deaths of offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. The crash happened roughly 12 hours after the school held a championship celebration at Sanford Stadium celebrating Georgia's 65-7 victory over TCU in the national title game on Jan. 9.
Smart addressed the reckless driving issues within the program at the SEC media days in July.
"When you drive at high speeds, it’s unsafe," Smart said. "We don’t want that to happen. We’re going to do all we can to take that out and make sure that’s eradicated."
Georgia offensive lineman Sedrick Van Pran also said "this cannot continue to happen."
